After controlling age, sex, BMI, marital status, smoking, duration of sleep and depression, they found that meditation was associated with a 35 percent lower risk of high cholesterol, a lower risk of 14 percent high blood pressure, a lower risk of 30 percent diabetes mellitus, a lower risk of stroke and a 49 percent lower risk of coronary artery disease.
Leading author, Dr. Chayakrit Krittanawong of Baylor College of Medicine, said the reduction in pressure that meditation can produce at least some of the results. However, he cautioned that the study was merely practical and that clinical trials would be needed to find a way to describe the association. He also added that the study did not distinguish between many types of meditation.
However, he said, "I believe that any form of meditation can come with the benefits of reducing the risk of heart disease."
